4th of July Flotilla 2022

We are planning the annual flotilla which will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022 with a rain date of Sunday, July 3, 2022. You can monitor the Elkhart River Queen Facebook page for up to the minute information.

Boats are asked to gather at Six Span Bridge at 1:00 pm and then follow the Elkhart River Queen downstream.

New route:  Follow behind the Queen from Six Span; the Queen will hang a left after crossing the point before Martin’s Landing so the flotilla will pass by Martins Landing so the spectators on shore can cheer us on. The flotilla will then cross the river back to the North and sail past the Greenleaf Condos (Those folks have always asked us to come down their way) the Flotilla will circle past the dam and the Queen will dock at her berth.  Participants should wait in the Queen’s Bay next to the Queen.  The winners will be announced along with the placard number, scream, shout, honk your horn and hold up your number so the Safety Patrol can find you and deliver your prize.

As in the past few years there is no theme, so you can decorate your boat anyway you like. You can use current events (wow we have a lot of those), celebrities, Elkhart landmarks, the possibilities are endless. We are also adding some new categories; Vintage Boats and your favorite TV show or Movie. We are excited to see what you come up with this year! We have hundreds of dollars in cash prizes that will be awarded for the best decorated boats and also the special prize for the Most Patriotic Decorated Boat named after our late friend and supporter Jim Pettit. Jim piloted the Judges boat for many years.  We have always allowed “Politically themed” boats to enter our contest and several have won. We are making a change to our policy regarding “Political” floats. They will no longer be eligible for prizes.

What if I can’t decorate, can I still be in the flotilla?  Most certainly the more boats the merrier.

In many of our years we had a “Commodore” this year we are honoring the late Pam Fileccia. Pam was a founding member of the St. Joe River Flotilla Committee which was formed in 1976 and Pam served on the committee for many years.

In the past we have had three guest judges rate the decorated boats, this year the 100 guests onboard the River Queen will be the Judges.

If you are participating in the Flotilla please fill out this form to bring with you: Flotilla Participant Form

Hand these forms to the Deck boat marked ‘Safety Patrol”.  All forms will be accepted. The Safety Patrol Team will in turn hand you a placard with a number on it.  When the Queen arrives at Six Span Bridge decorated boats should circle the Queen several times while holding up your number.  During the trip downstream the ballots will be tabulated and the winners will be announced when the Queen returns to her dock.  The Queen can only go as far as the Susquehanna Channel when she must turn around.  Last year many decorated boats were hanging out near the bridge and missed being judged.  The Queen will sound her horn when she rounds the corner, decorated boats should already have their placards and begin circling the Queen while holding up your number.

**Please be sure to return your placard to the Safety boat or the River Queen before departing the Queen’s Bay

We have some great sponsors for this event, check them out on the "Flotilla Sponsors" tab to the left and please think of them should you require their services.

Additional Flotilla Rules:  There have been serious injuries from water balloons thrown during past flotillas. The River Patrol will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy when it comes to anything thrown at boats in the flotilla. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable boating season.

In an Emergency:  The direct number to the Elkhart City 911 Center at civic plaza is 574-293-2175. You might wish to store this number in your cell phone as City Police. This could save precious minutes in an emergency while you are boating. Dialing 911 from your cell phone connects you with the County 911 center in Goshen.

Be Safe and Enjoy your summer.
