Elsie’s rules for spell casting:

Always tell the truth!  Every time you say a “not true” thing, it robs you of your magical power.  That is why a real witch always tells the truth – even though the truth might get them in trouble.

Your magical imagination:  This is when you “pretend” and “see” something in your mind.  Believe it or not, this is a powerful magical tool!  As Elsie’s Granny Witch always said: “Thoughts are Things”  and what you think and see in your head, with the right energy and actions behind it, will become real in this world.  So when you use your magical imagination, pretend, see and imagine with all your head and all your heart.

Never use your magic to try and hurt someone.  That is bad and you will get hurt also.

Paint these words on a smooth rock and place it in your garden. Put a few crumbs of cookie or cake and a tiny, doll size cup of root beer (fairy ale) beside the rock as an offering.

Then, light a little candle of the type used on birthday cakes. Drip a bit of melted wax on the rock to stick the candle on with.

Repeat the words and toss a bit of gold glitter into the air.  Sit with the candle until it goes out. If you are very still and very quiet, you may glimpse a fairy peeking at you from between some leaves or behind a flower!

To Bless a Pet

Using a red crayon, pencil or ink, draw a picture of your pet and write their name below it. Draw 3 red circles around the picture and the name.  Go outside with your pet and bury the drawing in the earth along with 3 bay leaves. (Bay leaf is a protection herb and Elsie’s Granny always said to use 3)   Then, wrap your arms around your pet, or hold it if its small enough, and say these words:

God and Goddess, wise and old,
Bless this creature that I hold.

Afterward, be sure to give your pet a special treat.

Did you know that when you make a wish and then blow the candles out on a birthday cake, that this is a magic spell? From Elsie's Book of Shadows comes this special ...

Birthday Ritual

Using a salad plate as a template, draw a circle on a piece of aluminum foil.  Cut the circle out.  This will be your little “altar”.  (You can draw designs on it if you like)

Take three little birthday candles – a blue one to represent the Past, a yellow one to represent the Present and a white one for the Future.

Have an adult (or you can if you’re old enough) drip a bit of wax on a foil circle to hold each candle upright.  Then, go out into the yard and pick enough green leaves to create a circle around the candles. (The green leaves represent Growth and, yes, you can add some flower petals too if you’d like.)  Now, light the blue candle and say:

T
hese are my Yesterdays.

As it burns, think about all your memories.  Think of how you’ve grown in the past year and of all the things you’ve learned and done.  Keep doing this until the candle burns down and out.

Next light the yellow candle and say:

This is my Today.

Think about where you are right now…what grade you are in, who your friends are, what you are learning right now.  You can even think about what your favorite food is.  In a few years, it might be something different, but what is it now?  Think about things like this while the yellow candle burns down and out.

Then light the white candle and say:

These are my Tomorrows.

As this candle burns down, think about all the things you’d like to do and be and learn in the future.

After that, try to think of a specific wish you have for the coming year.  Take a balloon (white is best, but it can be another color).  Concentrate very hard on your wish and visualize it as a picture inside your heart and tummy area.  Using your Magic Breath, blow the wish picture into the balloon. Now, take a pin and POP the balloon.  As it pops, your wish will be blown into the future!

Afterwards, be sure to bury the balloon and any remaining wax in the earth.  Place the leaves and flower petals on top when you’re done.
